Description
Photograph from a portrait of John Neal (1793-1876).
Written on the photo is: "From a portrait in 1821-or 2 by Miss Sarah Peale niece of Rembrandt Peale age 29-30."
Neal wrote several novels, edited and published in numerous periodicals, and became involved in wide-ranging causes including phrenology, gymnastics, boxing, women's rights, anti-racism, civic improvement and temperance.
