Description
A large 45-star flag flies over the homestead of John Davis Long (1838-1915) in Buckfield photographed in September 1899 when Long was Secretary of the Navy. Long is standing in the doorway of the house, to the left of the path leading up to the farm.
John D. Long was appointed Secretary of the Navy (1897-1902) by President William McKinley. Earlier Long had served as Governor of Massachusetts (1879-1883) and as a U.S. Congressman (1883-1889).
Born in Buckfield on October 27, 1838, Long died in Hingham, Mass., on August 28, 1915.
