Description

In 1936, the Androscoggin River experienced record flood levels that completely destroyed the iron bridge between Durham and Lisbon falls and severly damaged many of the mills along the river. This was the second largest flood to be recorded in the history of Lisbon- the largest being the flood of 1814 when the surging Androscoggin destroyed a total of 21 sawmills.

This is an image of the interior of the Worumbo textile mill in Lisbon Falls during the flooding of 1936. The photo records the flooding of a stairway at the mill. Mill machines can be seen becoming submerged by the floodwaters, as well as cases of bottles, newspapers and other debris.
