This image is from the Atlas of plates illustrating the Geology of the State of Maine accompanying the first report on the geology of the state, by Charles T. Jackson, engraving and lithography by Thomas Moore, 1837.
Francis (Franz) Graeter painted the image while on an expedition with Jackson. Graeter, a native of Germany, lived in America from 1826 to 1842.
The date of this image corresponds with the second light tower at West Quoddy head, 1830-1856. This tower, built of rubble masonry, replaced the initial wooden tower built in 1808. It in turn was replaced by the current brick tower, erected in 1857. Though obviously a highly romanticized, fanciful image, this appears to be the only known rendering of the second tower.
The exact site of this tower is known from archaeological excavations of 2001-02.
