Contributed by Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse
Description
Wood Island Lighthouse photo taken by the US Coast Guard on April 4, 1975. The "headless" tower, with its aerobeacon, is tended by keeper Jerry Murray (1973-1976).
The old steel fog bell is sitting in the corner of the yard. The fog bell tower from which this bell was removed in 1890 is long gone.
The light was founded in 1808 by commission of Thomas Jefferson and remains an important beacon along the Maine Coast helping mariners navigate safe passage in and out of Wood Island Habor and Saco Bay.
