Description
Bayard Taylor Stanley (1861-1915) and his wife, Laura Jane (Landers) Stanley (1860-1954) sit for a portrait in the parlor of their Kingfield home, circa 1910.
Bayard ("Bay"), the youngest of the Stanley siblings, worked for his older brothers at their Stanley Dry Plate Company factories in Lewiston and in Watertown, Mass., before retiring in 1897 when he came down with tuberculosis. After recuperating for some time at the sanatorium in Hebron, Bay returned to Kingfield to farm.
He had his house built by Kingfield builder Lavella A. Norton, who constructed a well-ventilated turret or "tower" where Bay slept. It was considered beneficial for consumptives to sleep in fresh, moving air, even in winter.
Bayard Stanley died of tuberculosis on July 12, 1915. Laura, his widow, outlived him by nearly 40 years.
