Description

This photograph shows the destruction of stores along both sides of Main Street.

Mr. Philpot, the photographer, was standing in front of the site where the Sanford Institution for Savings is situated today, looking north.

In the background, left, are the Dennett store and the Bradford Block, both which are still standing. The three and on-half story building in the background, center, was Kempton's Clothing Manufactory.

The fire started in the boiler room of W.R. Usher abd Sons' shoe shop on Bridge Street at about 2 a.m. on on April 14. In three hours the shoe shops on Bridge and Pleasant Streets and the heart of Springvale's business district were destroyed.
