Contributed by The General Henry Knox Museum
Description
By 1929 the Knox Memorial Association had raised enough money to break ground on the Knox Memorial, a reconstruction of Henry Knox's mansion, Montpelier, which stood on the banks of the St. Georges River in Thomaston from 1794 - 1871. Publishing magnate Cyrus H. K. Curtis was a key financial player in the effort, contributing about $200,000 to the effort. He is pictured here breaking ground on the memorial. The farmhouse on the left hand side of the picture was torn down to make way for the new mansion.
