Description
Engraving of Metacom, the Wampanoag sachem, called King Philip by English settlers.
Metacom became Sachem of the Pokanoket and Grand Sachem of the Wampanoag Confederacy after the suspicious death of his older brother, the Grand Sachem Wamsutta in 1662.
Metacom's open distrust of the Plymouth Colony came to a head when Wamsutta died while on a peace mission. Metacom organized other Native people in protest of Colonial disregard for previously negotiated agreements between the settlers and Wampanoags, starting what is known as "King Philip's War" in 1675.
