Description
On July 25, 1903, the 153rd anniversary of General Henry Knox's birth, the General Knox Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a tablet on the site of Montpelier, the mansion General Henry Knox built at the head of the St. Georges River in Thomaston in 1794.
Speakers included the Hon. Joseph E. Moore of Thomaston and Congressman Charles E. Littlefield.
The original mansion was razed in 1871, and the local DAR mourned the loss of the town's only monument to the Revolutionary War hero. Building on ceremonies such as this one, their efforts led to reconstruction of the mansion in 1929.
