Description
Portland Municipal Airport began as a private flying field for Dr. Clifford Strange. The City of Portland bought the airfield in 1936, and in 1940, the Works Progress Administration built Portland’s first terminal, a brick structure that is now the general aviation terminal. In 2014, the airport is known as the Portland International Jetport.
The first airline to use Portland Municipal Airport regularly was Boston & Maine Airlines. Boston & Maine morphed into Northeast Airlines in 1940, and merged in 1972 with Delta Airlines.
