Description
Because of its location -- convenient to Canada and Europe -- the Presque Isle airport became an army airfield starting in 1941, important for air transport to Great Britain.
Presque Isle and Dow Army Air Force base in Bangor delivered Lend-Lease aircraft to Great Britain and served as embarkation points for Army Air Forces personnel and equipment.
This photo shows the Army barracks at the Presque Isle base. After the base was closed in 1961 these buildings saw various uses.
