Anne Longfellow Pierce dumbbells, ca. 1829

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

George Washington Pierce gave these dumbbells to his fiance, Anne Longfellow Pierce of Portland, to help her exercise and cure her badly curved spine before their marriage in 1832.

The dumbbells were one of the few personal possessions that remained in her home on Congress Street, which she left to the Maine Historical Society as a tribute to her brother, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
