Description
This quadrant belonged to Commodore Edward Preble, a Portland native who went to sea at the age of 16. He served with distinction in the Revolutionary War and became the commanding officer of the USS Constitution, leading the U.S. Navy during the Barbary Wars of 1803-1805.
Quadrants were used for determining the position of a ship at sea based on the sun, stars and planets.
