Description
Main Street Looking North, Springvale, ca 1890. The buildings in this photo, from left to right, were Kempton's Clothing Manufactory (also called the Springvale Shirt Company); A.J. Smith's Hardware Store; Edward Holmes (manufacturer of tonic, root beer and ginger ale); I. B. Stiles Clothing Store; Moses Dennett's store (he was the father of John A. Dennett whose store was across the street); Charles H. Frost (millinery shop); Weeks and Cheney (sewing machines) and Enoch Lord (shoes and dress good). The gap between the stores of Charles H. Frost and Weeks and Cheney stopped the progess of the 1905 Springvale fire as it moved north along Main Street. The buildings to the right of the gap were destroyed in that fire. The five buildings to the left of it were destroyed in the name of progress by urban renewal in the early 1970s.
