Description
The interior of the old Houlton Fire House. The pieces of fire fighting equipment that are numbered are, 1. Horse sled to be drawn by some truck horses, 2 & 3. hand drawn hose wheels, 4. horse drawn fire engine, 5. horse drawn ladder truck.
Horses were not stabled at the fire house. When the fire alarm sounded, the first "local truckman" who arrived with his team of horses was paid to pull the equipment to the fire. It is said that when the alarm sounded, every team of horses in the area was detached from it's wagon and raced to the fire house because the first team there got the job.
