Description
Dr. John S. H. Fogg portrait, painted by Isaac Henry Caliga (1857-1934), one of the first Provincetown artists, hangs at the William Fogg Library.
John Samuel Hill Fogg (1826-1893) was born in Eliot, graduated from Bowdoin College in 1846 and Harvard Medical School in 1850. He established his practice in South Boston, Massachusetts. After contracting polio in 1873 and no longer able to practice medicine, he began seriously collecting letters containing signatures of noted figures in politics and other areas.
The William Fogg Library was established in 1907 for the residents of Eliot by a trust from Dr. John S. H. Fogg in memory of his father, William Fogg.
