Description
Caption from the Bangor Daily News, 17 Oct. 1944, "Pvt. Vera Edwards mails packages to her soldier sons overseas, just making the October 15 deadline on Christmas packages."
The deadline on Christmas packages to the front was surprisingly early, since the delivery of parcels had to be prioritized along with many other supplies and munitions. Although it was possible to send items after this date, there was no guarantee that they would be received in time. Pvt. Edwards had two sons serving overseas, Pvt. Jack Mitchell, a physical instructor in England, and Pfc. Dick Mitchell, a Marine whose picture was in National Geographic Magazine after the Amphibious Corps took the Emirau Islands.
