Description
USS Montauk, a 1335-ton Passaic class monitor and one of the Civil War iron-clad ships, came to Portland Harbor on May 13, 1898 to guard the area during the Spanish American War of 1898. Sixty five local men served onboard while the Montauk was stationed near Fort Gorges.
