Jacques Cartier banner, Lewisston, ca. 1900

Description

The banner was used by the Jacques Cartier Institut of Lewiston, the group that organized the annual St. Jean Baptiste celebrations from about 1890 to 1922.

The group featured patriotism and loyalty as well as Franco-American pride.

The banner's slogan is translated "Loyal yet still French-Canadians." The banner includes a number of symbolic items: the eagle, fleur-de-lis, maple leaf, and the beaver as well as the French and American flags.
