Description
George F. Shepley, a brigadier general in the Union Army, wrote to Horatio Jose, his friend in Portland, about various business dealings. He apparently used Jose to carry on his business activities in Portland, an activity that they tried to keep confidential.
Shepley (1818-1893), commander of the 12th Maine Regiment, had been military commandant of New Orleans and was named military governor of Louisiana in June 1862. Shepley was a lawyer and U.S. attorney in Portland before the war.
For a time, Jose, a businessman, was quartermaster of the 12th Maine.
