Description

William Mathew Prior (1806-1873) created this oil painting when he was 18 years old. He wrote on the back of the canvas, "W. M. Prior, painter, formerly of Bath. Painted in C. Codman's shop, Portland, Maine."

William Mathew Prior was a folk art portrait painter who was born and raised in Bath, Maine. He painted for many years in Bath and Portland until he moved to East Boston where he wrote two books and continued to paint. There are bout 1,500 portraits attributed to Prior, and his works can be found in many museums and institutions around the United States.
