Description
John Neal (1783-1876) of Portland tried many things, among them, boxing, writing novels, law, journalism, art-criticism and architecture. He also was an advocate for women's rights and influential in Portland and beyond.
This photograph was taken from a portrait of Neal by his friend G.W. Appleton (1805-1831) that was painted in 1829.
