Description
Gordon E. Bennett's uniform jacket from Chandler's Band of Portland, a community band that began in 1842 and is still in existence.
Bennett played tuba/Sousaphone with the band from the late 1940s until his death in 1996.
Town bands often carried on the tradition of military bands and uniforms often resemble military uniforms. Members of Chandler's Band (then known as the Portland Band) served in the Civil War as the First Regimental Band.
