Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

John Bundy Brown (1805-1881) was one of Portland's wealthiest businessmen by 1850. He operated a real estate business and a sugar refinery and was a prominent art patron with a gallery in his mansion, Bramhall.

Sculptor Franklin Simmons (1839-1913), moved to Italy from Portland in 1867, but remained connected to Portland. Besides this bust of Brown, he created the Longfellow and Our Lady of Victory statues at Longfellow and Monument squares.
