Description
Hollis-born sculptor Charles "Karl" Akers (1835-1906) produced this bas relief of William Pitt Fessenden in 1865.
Fessenden (1806-1869) was a lawyer who served in the Maine Legislature and Congress before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1854. He was a senator until 1869, except for a brief term as Lincoln's treasury secretary.
Akers lost his possessions and commissions in the Portland fire of 1866 and left Portland for Cambridge, Massachusetts.
