Description
This hand grapple is a good example of a home-made device used on many Aroostook County farms.
It was used mainly during harvest to pull barrels onto a truck or wagon. The user stood on the truck body and, with the handle in hand, reached down to fit the grapple end onto the top of the barrel.
The user would lift the barrel onto the truck with the assistance of another person who would walk beside the truck or wagon and boost the barrel from the bottom.
This hand grapple was used until the 1940's when the power grapple became in use. Only one person was needed to load with a power grapple.
It appears that the handle of this grapple was made from a digger lag. Digger lags were 1/2 inch bars that were used on potato harvesters to sift the potatoes from the rows.
This hand grapple was donated by Chad Putnam, Mapleton, who farmed in Easton.
