Description
Naval seaman John M. Dillingham was serving aboard the U.S. sloop of war Housatonic off Charleston, South Carolina during the Civil War when he wrote his mother. He discussed drills and chores aboard ship, taking a prize, and other ships captured or destroyed by the Union blockade.
John mentions the death of Stonewall Jackson and deployment of Union troops. He asked his mother to write him if she sees prize money being paid.
