Description

Naval seaman John Monroe is aboard the U.S. sloop of war Housatonic. He writes from Port Royal, South Carolina, where they have gone to load coal about what a nasty job it is.

He talks about getting a box from home (the apples were a bit rotten), about yellow fever, and gives a more accurate description of an incident on the bloackade than the newspapers gave.

He reports that his friend John Angier Hyde (1843-?) is well. He also describes Thanksgiving Day dinner aboard ship.
