Description
Jean-Louis-Anne-Magdeleine Lefebvre de Cheverus (1768-1836) came to America in 1796 and worked with the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Indians.
Ordained in 1810, he was the first Catholic bishop of Boston.
The inscription on this image reads, "The Right Rev. John Cheverus first Bishop of Boston subsequently Archbishop of Bordeaux and Cardinal 1836." He was made archbishop in 1826 and cardinal in 1836.
