Description
Photograph of ship painting made by George B. Webber. This ship was part of the George Skolfield Fleet.
Written on painting: Ship Sam Skolfield. S. Skolfield, Master, off Cape Leeuwin from Melbourne for Calcutta. Sept. 25th, 1884. Written on back of photograph: 2nd Ship by same name.
The Sam Skolfield 2nd was to have been named the Skolfield Brothers, but the ship Sam Skolfield was lost in a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico while the new ship was on the stocks so it was launched in 1883 as the Sam Skolfield 2nd. The second Sam was a slow sailer and in her later years, often in trouble.
