The Ship George R. Skolfield was launched on the evening of Saturday, June 13, 1885 at Harpswell Cove, Brunswick on the midnight tide. This ship was the culmination of 83 years of shipbuilding by the Skolfields, the last and largest full-rigged ship ever built in Brunswick. She grossed 1731 tons and measured 232 feet overall from her gracefully curved stern to the figurehead at the bow carved in the likeness of her principal owner after whom she was named. At the turn of her bilge was a solid 18 inches of planking, futtocks and ceiling, and 90 tons of iron had gone into her fittings and gear.
