Description

Harry Jones landed on Boston Common in this plane in January 1912.

He convinced Boston authorities to let him fly the first airmail, a package with Boston Baked Beans, to New York to show how efficient airmail was.

It took him 39 days to reach New York, due to weather and mechanical difficulties.

Jones, who spent 20 years in Old Orchard Beach, and had an airport on the beach, using the hardpacked sand at low tide as a runway, was an advocate of aviation safety.
