Description
Margaret Chase Smith at the groundbreaking ceremony for the library bearing her name in Skowhegan, June 9, 1981.
Smith, a native of Skowhegan, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1940 following the death of her husband, Clyde Smith, who had previously held the seat. She was a U.S. Senator from Maine from 1948-1972.
