Description

S. S. Rich & Son coffins and undertakers on Exchange Street in Portland. The photo was taken after the Great Fire of 1866. This shop was at 138 Exchange Street. His shop was destroyed in the 1866 fire, apparently rebuilding quickly as he is listed in the John Neal book on the Portland Conflagration with the same address. The address was then changed to 106 Exchange Street. By 1882, it appears a new, brick 3-story building replaced this one. Born in 1809 in Portland, Samuel Snow Rich was a cabinetmaker who established his first business in 1938.
