Description
Sea captain John Dillingham wrote to his wife, Margaret, in Freeport to let her know he had arrived in New York after a passage of 103 days from Palermo, Italy. The letter was written Sept. 17, 1846.
In a previous letter dated June 3, he said he had expected the voyage to take short of two months, a relatively long trip because "for this season of the year, we expect a great deal of westerly winds." The trip took nearly twice as long as he expected.
