Description
Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) of New Hampshire, a distant cousin and friend, wrote to George Washington Pierce of Portland, agreeing with an address G.W. Pierce wrote about the interests of the middling class in America.
Franklin Pierce deplores the arguments of the "manufacturing capitalists" who rely on the phrase "the American System" in promoting policies that help their finances and hurt those of the "farmers and mechanicks."
