Description
The 69-foot commuter yacht Saga, built by the Wheeler Co., is shown at Clifton Dock in Northeast Harbor in the 1930s.
Charles Shipman Payson owned the yacht. His brother-in-law, John Hay Whitney, owned Aphrodite II and it was common for the two yachts to race from neighboring Long Island estates to New York City. Saga always won.
In 1937, Whitney ordered the 74-foot Aphrodite III, with twin V-12 Packard engines to beat Shipman. Aphrodite III was later renovated by Brooklin Boat Yard.
