Description
John Ruggles, (1789-1874) of Thomaston wrote to Josiah Pierce of Gorham, a member of the Maine Senate, concerning Pierce's suggestion that Ruggles be a candidate for the U.S. Senate. Ruggles agreed to be a candidate.
Ruggles, like Pierce, was a Democrat. He had been speaker of the Maine House and a state court judge. He served as Maine's U.S. Senator from 1835-1841.
