Responding to a letter from fellow Democrat Josiah Pierce of Gorham, Francis O.J. Smith, a U.S. Representative from Maine, 1833-39, commented on the surplus of banks and the danger to the public as a result.
He also told Pierce he was willing to stand for re-election.
