Charles Jarvis to Josiah Pierce, 1835

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Charles Jarvis (1788-1865) of Hancock County wrote an angry letter to Josiah Pierce (1792-1866) of Gorham, responding to what he thought was an insult in a previous letter from Pierce. Both men were members of the Maine Senate.

Jarvis supported paying a partial salary to an ailing judge. He also suggested that Cumberland County was arrogant and that other parts of the state rebel against Cumberland's power.
