Description
Born about 1811 in Biddeford, Albert J. Smith was a local butcher for many years and listed his occupation as a merchant in 1880.
He was the first president of what later became Riverside Cemetery in Springvale.
Elected Town Treasurer in 1861, 1863 and from 1874-75, he held the position only briefly in 1863. Having been elected at the March meeting in 1863, he declined to do all business connected with the offices of treasurer, collector, and constable, for $25, the amount which he bid.
William Emery then agreed to do this same business for $88 and was elected April 18, 1863. Albert Smith was a selectman in 1852 and 1859, and also a deputy sheriff in 1857.
