South Portland fire dog, 1954

Description

Spanner, the South Portland Fire Department mascot, on Engine 10, the foam unit designed to handle major oil fires.

The drive is Norman W. Cribby. Ralph F. Thompson is facing the camera.

Spanner was given to the department by a farmer whose property the department saved during the great forest fires of 1947. The dog was featured in stories in Parade Magazine and several children's publications.
