In 1844, King Chapel was named for the Hon. William King, who framed the constitution of this state and was the first governor of Maine. The King Chapel was finally completed in 1855 and dedicated June 7, almost exactly ten years after laying of the cornerstone.

The cost was $46,509.10 more than three times the original estimate.

The building beside the chapel was known as South College until 1845, when it was named Appleton Hall for President Appleton's. The college constructed the building as a dormitory at the cost of $9,088.25.
