Description
Bowdoin College buildings are, from left, Winthrop Hall behind the trees, King Chapel in background, and the entryway of Massachusetts Hall on the right.
Winthrop Hall was built in 1822 as a dormitory at a cost of $9,536.16. For the first twenty years it was known as "New College" or "North College" then it was named for John Winthrop, the first Governor of Massachussetts Bay.
Massachusetts Hall was the College's first building, dedicated September 2, 1802.
