Description
Caleb R. Ayer (1813-1883) he served as Secretary of State in 1857 during Governor Wells’ administration.
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1834 and was admitted to the bar in 1838. He entered into a partnership with Nathan Clifford that lasted until 1841 when he moved to Cornish where he continued to reside until his death.
He was elected to the State Senate in 1847 and 1848, serving in the latter year as its president.
In 1868, 1869 and 1870, Ayer was County Attorney for York County.
