Description
The son of a Democratic gubernatorial candidate and grandson of a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Nathan Clifford of Portland also was involved in Democratic politics.
(1867-was born in Portland in 1867. A graduate of Portland High School and Phillips Academy, Clifford graduated from Harvard in 1890.
Mayor of Portland in 1905, Clifford was elected to the Maine Senate and became its president when the Democrats organized the Legislature in 1911 for the first time since before the Civil War and for the last time until the 1960s.
In 1912, the Republicans regained control of the Legislature, including Clifford's seat.
