Description
Carl E. Milliken (1887-1961), governor of Maine from 1916-1920, graduated from Cony High School and Bates College in the class of 1897.
He earned a master's degree from Harvard in 1899 before moving to Island Falls to enter the lumber business.
Milliken was general manager of the Mattawamkeag Lumber Company, the Stockholm Lumber Company, the Howard Axe Company, and president of the Katahdin Farmer's Telephone Company.
He served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1905-1909, then served in the Maine Senate from 1909-1917. He was president from 1913-1915.
He ran for governor as a Progressive candidate in 1916.
He led Maine through World War I, was the first governor nominated by direct primary and the first to live in the Blaine House.
Milliken left office on January 5, 1921 to return to his job as Secretary of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association, the movie industry's first self-censorship body.
