Description
Thomas Brackett Reed (1839-1902) of Portland as a young man.
Reed graduated from Bowdoin College, then studied law, setting up his practice in Portland.
He served in the Maine House of Representatives in 1868 and 1869, in the Senate in 1870; and as attorney general of Maine 1870-1872.
A Republican, he served 12 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (from 1877-1899) He was speaker of the house for several terms.
