Description
James H. Hamlen II with bird in a bird cage.
A native of Portland and a graduate of Harvard University, Hamlen inherited the family cooperage. He was the son of James C. Hamlen Jr. and Eleanor Downing Hamlen.
The company, which supplied staves and wooden materials for ships, was founded by Hamlen's great-grandfather and namesake, James H. Hamlen, in Portland In 1846.
The family began a branch of the company in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1892.
